“THE EVOLUTION OF PERSONAL RESTRAINT”
In 1912 George Carney invented the single lock, swing-through handcuff design for use by police departments. His design is still know today as the ‘modern handcuff’. Carney’s design was revolutionary and simplified what can be at times a very dangerous task (handcuffing someone). Although it was a great invention for its time, its time has come to an end.
Introducing the MURPHY HANDCUFF. The Murphy handcuff is the next generation of police duty handcuff.

THE MURPHY HANDCUFF STORY.
John Malone, Founder and President of the Murphy Handcuff Company, is a former US Army Officer and Police Officer.
Malone designed and engineered the Murphy handcuff to be the safest police duty handcuff ever built.
The inspiration for the Murphy handcuff came to Malone in 2016 after two Georgia deputies were murdered during a prisoner transport. During this transport two convicted felons were able to break free from their handcuffs, overpower the deputies, murder them, and escape. Because of this tragedy, Malone knew it was time to build a better handcuff.
Over the past 110 years to many officers, and civilians, have been injured and killed due to the failure of the so-called modern handcuff design.
The Murphy handcuff is revolutionary in its own design. It incorporates fourteen strength and safety improvements over the Carney design. The two most important of which are the new triple-lock locking mechanism and Trident key.
Frank J. Murphy was the first NYPD motorcycle cop killed in the line of duty.
Like a scene out of an old B&W movie; While on motorcycle patrol in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, Murphy spotted a stolen car and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver failed to yield and took off at a high rate of speed. Murphy pursued. As the pursuit continued, one of the four occupants, (the back seat occupant) leaned out the window with a Thompson machine gun in hand motioning for Murphy to back off. Murphy refused. As the pursuit continued the chase turned deadly. The crook with the Thompson began firing at Murphy. During this exchange of gunfire Murphy was struck four times knocking him off his motor. Murphy returned fire, even after being wounded and knocked to the ground. The crooks escaped, but were later apprehended by the New York State Police.
The next day, 08/08/1926, NYPD Patrolman Frank J. Murphy succumb to his injuries. He was 27 years old.
A few weeks after this tragedy the New York State Police recovered the vehicle. It had been reported stolen. When the vehicle was examined, it was discovered to have six impact marks consistent with .38 caliber bullets. With Murphy having fired all six rounds from his duty weapon at the pursuing vehicle, during the pursuit, it is believed that these were from Murphy’s revolver.
In his honor; The Murphy Handcuff Company was formed.
